A few days ago, when I watched the movie "Maidan" (2014) of the revolution in kyiv's independence square, what I associate most with is not the more widely known and the same theme "The fire of winter" (2015), nor is it a hit in theaters and the same struggle. The documentary hong kong's "Revolution of the times" (2021), but many years ago, I (we) plunged into several scenes in it.
People who have walked through the streets of taiwan may experience a strong shock and dislocation at first when watching the protests in hong kong and the revolution in ukraine, because social movements in taiwan will not be so severely suppressed, let alone a large number of casualties. And collective trauma. However, if you look at the faces of some Illustrator Art Work protesters and the actions of the government in power in response to the protests, you will see more and more commonalities. Taiwanese are better able to imagine the anger and powerlessness of hong kong people, and even better to imagine where the will of ukrainians to resist came from.
"People's rebellion" links differences to each other
At this moment, taiwan is indeed very different from hong kong and ukraine, but that is not the current situation for granted, and the current situation is by no means stable, because the expanding totalitarian regime may exceed rational predictions, and the organized crime logic of major powers launching wars may also be beyond imagination. "People's resistance" is something we can empathize with, and through the free flow of information and writing, we can clarify our differences and lead to mutual recognition. Both hong kong and ukraine's "Resistance" has gone through more stages than taiwan. The common sense makes us think, and after thinking, we have more empathy.
